Visualization through evaluation of aerial photographs
Numerous traces of archaeological sites have been detected and documented from the bird's eye-view, which means from the aircraft, in the last 30 years. This is the reason why today the systematic evaluation of aerial photographs ranks among the most important survey methods within archaeological studies. In Germany, for example, a lot of unknown wreck sites have been detected by observing coastal waters. Obvious changes at the wrecks and their surroundings can be documented during one month in the autumn or in the wintertime, when the vegetation in waters is poor and the visibility is good. By the help of the photographs, even countermeasure can be taken when necessary. In the MoSS Project, the evaluation of aerial photographs will be used especially in the visualization of the Darsser Kogge and its surroundings.
